SnipCard ADC 16 bit – Introduction

The SnipCard ADC 16 bit is a fast and reliable I2C bus analog to digital converter. It is – as well as all of our SnipCards – 100% compatible with Arduino.

The ADS1115 I2C digital to analog converter

The core of the SnipCard ADC 16 bit is the well known ADS1115 converter, made by Texas Instruments. Let’s look at some infos coming from the Texas Instruments’ datasheet:

The […] ADS1115 devices are precision, low-power, 16-bit, I2Ccompatible, analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The ADS1115 devices incorporate a low-drift voltage reference and an oscillator. The ADS1115 also incorporate a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) and a digital comparator. These features, along with a wide operating supply range, make the ADS1115 well suited for power- and space-constrained, sensor measurement applications.

The ADS1115 perform conversions at data rates up to 860 samples per second (SPS). The PGA offers input ranges from ±256 mV to ±6.144 V, allowing precise large- and small-signal measurements. The ADS1115 features an input multiplexer (MUX) that  allows two differential or four single-ended input measurements. Use the digital comparator in the ADS1115 for under- and overvoltage detection.

The ADS1115 operates in either continuous conversion mode or single-shot mode. The devices are automatically powered down after one conversion in single-shot mode; therefore, power consumption is significantly reduced during idle periods.

SnipCard ADC 16 bit – Description

The SnipCard ADC 16 bit is provided with input noise filtering and voltage divider for each channel. This gives the possibility to read a voltage span from 0 up to 36 V. We provide a standard version with 0 to 10 Volt input span, common mode ferrite bead in series and two filter capacitors per channel. For any customization please ask through the contact form.

The SnipCard does always provide 4 input channels, but in the 2 way version the channels 1-3 and 2-4 are tied together. This configuration – despite of its apparent weirdness – is due to the particular form factor of the Archiduino system, who allows just 2 input channels per slot. So, if you choose the 4 channel version, you get the same SnipCard with track cuts and an additional pin header for the two additional channels.

SnipCard ADC 16 bit – Arduino Libraries

Adafruit released a fully functional Arduino library for the ADS1115 ADC integrated circuit. We tested our product with that beautiful library. We do not provide any other library because of the huge, open source work already available on the web.

Please, note that Adafruit’s work has a great value, and it deserves the due respect. Please consider to visit their website and buy their fantastic products. We love Adafruit, they gave us great inspiration. Their gigantic archive of products and how-tos provided (and still provides) a priceless help in learning and keeping up to date in the makers’ world.
